In order to Infer the characteristics of an anomaly in the earth's conductivity in the equatorial region from the dally geomagnetic variations (d.g.v.) It Is necessary to know beforehand the ionospheric current system that produces them. As in the Peruvian zone the d.g.v, have been measured over a large region, It Is possible to find a model to represent the Ionospheric current system which must Include an extended (planetary) part and a localized part (the electrojet). The parameters of this model are determined here fitting the field produced by this system at the earth's surface to the measured field. As in this region the current and the field have been measured simultaneously, the former can be compared with the results of the proposed model whose validity Is thereby proved.
