In this paper is valued the energy and environmental performance of on-grid photovoltaic systems installed on horizontal cover of urban buildings within, the study area covering 30 blocks that make up the downtown of the city of San Miguel de Tucumán. An electrical installation and possible layouts of the photovoltaic reference system of 3 kWp are designed, to study the production of electricity using the software PVSyst, and associated CO₂ emissions savings. Energy and environmental rates are obtained per unit of occupied area and peak power of the photovoltaic array. The available area within the study area is estimated, resulting in the order of 97100 m². Affecting it by the rates, the energy produced and total emission savings of PV systems are calculated. The average power delivered to the grid by the systems is about 2 MW and annual energy generated 18500 MWh, implying emissions savings of 9000 tonnes CO₂ per year. The work establishes a methodology for analysis and provides estimates that can be extrapolated to other geographic regions.
