La vizcacha es un roedor perteneciente al orden Rodentia, Suborden Hystricognathi, familia Chinchillidae, género Lagostomus. Es de hábito nocturno y permanece durante el día en su vivienda, llamada “vizcachera”. La reproducción de esta especie presenta algunas características poco frecuentes en los mamíferos eutherios, tales como poliovulación (200-800 ovocitos) y presencia de una alta mortalidad embrionaria. Dado que las vizcachas presentan características peculiares en su anatomía e histología, nos propusimos realizar un estudio anatómico, histológico,morfométrico y lectinhistoquímico del aparato reproductor femenino.

The viscacha is a South American rodent belonging to the order Rodentia, Suborder Hystricognathi,family Chinchillidae, gender Lagostomus.It isof nighthabits,remaining during the day in its housing, called “vizcachera”. The reproduction of this species presents some not very frequent characteristics among the eutherial mammals, such as polyovulation (200-800 oocytes) and high rate of embryonic mortality. Our goal was to perform an anatomical, histological, morphometric and lectinhistochemical study of the female reproductive tract ofthe viscacha.
