Quinto Centenario o la mirada insoslayable

Abstract

La recordación del Quinto Centenario del Descubrimiento europeo de América ha reactualizado la vieja polémica entre quienes condenan y quienes aplauden el hecho. Más allá de leyendas negras o leyendas rosas, es imperativo que las ciencias sociales tomen partido reconociendo la composición pluriétnica latinoamericana difundiendo y explicando el genocidio y el etnocidio en nuestro continente. Desde una posición ética corresponde comenzar a oír las voces de quienes tras siglos de resistencia reclaman la mirada solidaria de una humanidad que no se ciegue con los fuegos de artificio de la ExpoSevilla ’92.

The remembrance of the fifth centennial of the European discovery of America has revived the old dispute between those who condemn the event and those who applaud it. Beyond black and rosy legends, it is imperative that social sciences take a stand recognizing the pluriethnic composition of Latin America, and making know and explaining the genocide and ethnocide suffered in our continent. From an ethical standpoint, it is time to begin to hear the voices of those who after centuries of resistance claim solidarity from a mankind that will not be blinded by the fireworks of Expo Sevilla ’92.
