In the present study, the analgesic and the anti-inflammatory properties of A. coriacea
methanol extract were investigated. The experiments were performed by acetic acid writhing, paw licking induced by formalin, hot plate, paw edema and pleurisy. The extract inhibited (p<0.001) the abdominal contortions
(50 mg/kg = 45.87±2.12, 100 mg/kg = 29.87±2.30 and 200 mg/kg = 29.62±1.24) when compared with control
group. Both phases of paw lick were reduced (p < 0.001): 1st phase (50 mg/kg = 52.87±1.83, 100 mg/kg =
36.87±2.24 and 200 mg/kg = 35.75±2.17) and 2nd phase (50 mg/kg = 45.00±2.20, 100 mg/kg = 34.25±2.49 and
200 mg/kg = 32.62±2.22). At the dose 200 mg/kg (10.62±0.98), the effect on the reaction time at hot plate had
been significative (p < 0.01) after 90 minutes of treatment. The dose 200 mg/kg showed significative effects on
the paw edema (0.70(0.06), the volume of the exsudate (1.42±0.14) and the leukocytes migration (15.58±0.74).
These results suggest that the methanol extract from A. coriacea has analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties
and this data could explain the popular application.
