Las puertas del sueño: muerte, conocimiento y revelación en el libro 6 de <i>Eneida</i>

Abstract

En este artículo proponemos una interpretación de las Somni portae como umbral entre dos niveles de conocimiento diferentes: la posibilidad de conocer el futuro en el submundo y la incapacidad humana de comprender este saber. A tal fin, se reseña la bibliografía crítica sobre este pasaje y se estudian los diferentes significados de umbra, insomnium, verus y falsus. Se analiza asimismo la vinculación entre conocimiento, sueño, muerte y catábasis.

In this article we propose an interpretation of the Somni portae as a threshold between two different levels of knowledge: the possibility of learning about the future in the underworld and the human inability to understand such knowledge. With this aim, the critical bibliography about this passage is reviewed and the different meanings of umbra, insomnium, verus and falsus are examined. The relationship between knowledge, sleep, death and katabasis is also analyzed.
