Activated carbon from non-edible, dry fruits from a tree species (Pinus canariensis) was developed through phosphoric acid chemical activation. Chemical and textural characteristics of the precursor and the developed activated carbon were determined and compared with those characterizing a commercial sample. Specific surface area and total pore volume of the developed carbon were 1050 m2/g and 0,7 cm3/g, respectively. Comparison of the thermal behaviour for untreated and acidi-mpregnated samples of the precursor by thermogravimetric analysis enabled to examine the acid effect. The performance of the developed carbon in removal of methylene blue in solution was investigated. Complete removal of the dye was attained at equilibrium even for the lower dose (0,1 g / 100 mL). Present results demonstrate the feasibility of effective conversion of a forest waste, as a precursor, into activated carbon, in turn, showing high dye removal. They suggest that it is viable to use this forest waste, characterized by its availability in huge amounts, easy collection and renewable character, through its transformation into an added-value product extensively applied for prevention and/or remediation of environmental pollution problems.
