Hacia una sistemática de las teorías sobre el origen del hexámetro dactílico

Abstract

Como suele suceder, existe una proporción inversa entre la cantidad de teorías sobre el origen de los metros griegos y la evidencia disponible para corroborarlas. Las discusiones en esta sub-disciplina de la metricología, y en particular entre aquellos que debaten sobre el origen del hexámetro, giran sobre argumentos que resultan permanentemente insuficientes, indebidamente verificados o sostenidos sobre axiomas pobremente justificados. Sin embargo, el debate, virtualmente paralizado durante los últimos veinte años, es importante para entender una parte sustancial de la herencia poética de los griegos. La publicación de David (2006), que recupera una vieja hipótesis sobre un origen extra-lingüístico del hexámetro, permite una reconsideración meta-teórica de las diferentes teorías, que analice su adecuación a la evidencia y su consistencia interna. El presente trabajo se concibe como el preludio de esa reconsideración, ya que intenta realizar una clasificación sistemática de las diferentes posturas vigentes sobre el origen del metro.

As it usually happens, there is an inverse proportion between the amount of theories regarding the origin of Ancient Greek metres and the evidence available to corroborate them. The debates in this sub-discipline of metricology, and particularly among those that discuss about the origin of the hexameter, revolve around arguments that are permanently insufficient, improperly verified or supported by unjustified axioms. However, the debate, virtually paralyzed for the last twenty years, is important in order to understand a substantial part of the Greeks' poetical heritance. The publication of David (2006), in which the author recovers an old hypothesis regarding an extra-linguistic origin of the hexameter, allows for a meta-theorical reconsideration of the different theories that analyzes their adequacy to evidence and their internal consistency. This work is conceived as a prelude to such reconsideration, since it attempts to conduct a systematic classification of the different still valid positions about the origin of the metre.
