As it has been pointed out by Lisdorf (2007: 21-22) and Santangelo (2013: 54-56), among others, in Cicero's texts the first occurrences of the word divinatio, meaning the combination of divinatory rituals, are registered. In this paper we will examine how this word is employed in De natura deorum and De divinatione and in which way it is evaluated. In particular, we will analyze the place it has in the opposition between religio (understood as a set of appropriate practices to carry out the cultus deorum) and superstitio (its negative counterpart, characterized by a disproportionate and irrational belief).
