The immobilization of tungstophosphoric acid (TPA) in core-shell spheres composed by polystyrene-silica was studied. Firstly, polystyrene spheres (PS) and also of PS with the addition of allylamine were prepared, which were coated with silica obtained using a modified Stöber method, using tetraethylorthosilicate as the precursor. These materials were impregnated with TPA by the incipient wetness impregnation technique, and then calcined at 200 °C. By scanning electron microscopy, spheres with a narrow size distribution were observed. The materials presented N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms characteristic of mesoporous materials. The characterization by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance revealed the presence of tungstophosphate anion with intact Keggin structure. By potentiometric titration, it was determined that all the solids have very strong acid sites. The materials were tested in the synthesis of 2,4,5- triphenyl-1H-imidazole, by solvent-free multicomponent reaction, yielding a high selectivity and very good yields, which can be correlated with the acidic characteristics of the catalysts.
