One of the current issues of major concern in higher education is the dropout of students during the first years of university life, mainly first-year students (Pierella, 2014; Aréchaga et al., 2015). In this regard, Pierella (2014) highlights the importance of teachers in first year courses since they are part of the institution referents the students interact with at the beginning of their career. A common conflict is preparing for final tests (Pierella, 2016). For this reason, a support program has been developed by the subject of Human Biology so that students can successfully go through this stage. Such strategy has been used in addition to further activities carried out by other subjects encouraged by the Peer Tutoring Program and the Pedagogic Unit of the School of Psychology of the UNLP (National University of La Plata) which aims at providing a space for exchange with students prior to taking their final exam.
The Human Biology subject is taken during the second term of each academic year. Since 2017, this subject has offered the support program during the first term to those students who passed the subject in the previous term. During the first meeting, students are informed about the assessment criteria and they are also given advice concerning how to prepare before the exam. Then, throughout each week, the most relevant topics of each unit are discussed. In addition, those students wishing to start their oral test with a topic of their choice are invited to do so; this stage enables the exchange of opinions regarding the organization and sequencing of the topic, the opportunity to make questions and to discuss how much information they should know about each topic, among others. Even though the program has been offered since 2017, in 2019 it was monitored during the meeting sessions in order to strengthen different aspects of the program taking into account the students’ opinion. Besides, a 29 points rating survey (Likert) was carried out on all the participants through the Virtual Classroom digital support and it was validated by means of Cronbach’s alpha reliability index.
