The scientific profile of the Institute of Physics of the University of La Plata, during the first twenty years of the twentieth century, was modeled after the traditional central European system that is as the supporting environment for research at leading and competitive levels. However, in the coming decades this profile was gradually transforming to a less competitive structure almost solely devoted to teaching. In this note, we analyze some of the reasons that may eventually be identified as the forces behind this transformation.
