Análisis de la eficiencia en el sector manufacturero italiano: el enfoque de la frontera estocástica

Abstract

El sector manufacturero italiano presenta características peculiares con respecto al panorama europeo. En él predominan las pequeñas y medianas empresas y la especialización en sectores maduros. Además, los llamados “distritos industriales” juegan un rol fundamental. El presente trabajo se propone individualizar los factores que determinan los diferentes niveles de eficiencia técnica alcanzados por las distintas empresas manufactureras italianas, mediante el enfoque econométrico de la Frontera Estocástica. Nuestras estimaciones indican que existe diversidad estructural intersectorial –diversidad de fronteras eficientes-, y que la ineficiencia técnica explica la mayor parte de la brecha entre los niveles individuales de eficiencia y las fronteras óptimas.

Italy holds a unique position in Europe owing to the peculiarities of its manufacturing industry. These include a majority of small and medium enterprises, the specialization in mature sectors and the important role played by the “industrial districts”. The present study aims at discovering the underlying factors determining the observed differences in the performance of the Italian manufacturing firms regarding technical efficiency. For this purpose we have chosen the econometric approach of the Stochastic Frontier. Our estimations point out the existence of intersectoral structural diversity –different efficient frontiers-. They also indicate that technical inefficiency accounts for the main part of the existing efficiency gaps.
