El objetivo del presente trabajo es caracterizar las redes alimentarias alternativas (RAA) en Medellín, Colombia y analizar los beneficios y limitantes que observan los productores, comercializadores y consumidores de las mismas. Se busca crear un marco referencial para futuros proyectos en el ámbito de las redes alimentarias alternativas en la región. La información fue obtenida identificando mercados alternativos que operan en la ciudad, realizando entrevistas a productores, comercializadores y actores institucionales, y encuestas a consumidores. A través de ello, se lograron identificar 3 modalidades de RAA en Medellín, 17 mercados alternativos, así como 3 tipos de productores que participan en estos mercados. Además se determinaron las características socioeconómicas de los consumidores y los beneficios y limitantes ecológicos, sociales y económicos que los tres actores de la cadena identifican en la producción, comercialización y consumo de alimentos ecológicos.

The objective of this investigation is to depict alternative food networks in Medellin, Colombia, analyzing their benefits and limitations for producers, retailers, and consumers, while seeking to establish a framework for future work and/or investigations related to alternative food networks in the region. The information was obtained by identifying alternative markets operating in the city and carrying out interviews with producers, retailers, and institutions as well as surveying consumers. Through this process, three types of alternative food networks, 16 alternative markets, and three kinds of producers were identified. Furthermore, the socioeconomic characteristics of consumers were determined as well as the main social, economic, and environmental benefits and limitations that all three players identified within the production, commercialization and consumption of organic food.
