Impactos del manejo hortícola sobre la biodiversidad y sus causas según agricultores de La Plata, Argentina

Abstract

En el Cinturón Hortícola Platense, los agricultores han reemplazado gran parte de los cultivos al aire libre por el cultivo bajo invernáculo. Este último se diferencia del cultivo al aire libre porque, en general, se utilizan prácticas más perjudiciales contra la biodiversidad. Se indagó la opinión de los agricultores en relación a sus prácticas agrícolas y a si generan impactos negativos en el medio ambiente. Se utilizó una metodología cualitativa, con entrevistas en profundidad a agricultores de diferente origen y sistemas de producción. Los que cultivan al aire libre resaltan la importancia de ciertos manejos ecológicamente adecuados. Los que cultivan bajo invernáculo, reconocen que ciertas prácticas no son beneficiosas para el medio ambiente, pero advierten que no hay otra manera de producir. Para lograr conservar la biodiversidad y avanzar hacia sistemas sustentables, se debería cambiar la visión de la agricultura como “fábrica de productos” y avanzar en una concepción sustentable entre el hombre y la naturaleza.

In the Horticultural Platense Region, farmers have replaced most of outdoor farming with cultivation under greenhouse. The latter differs from the first in that it is conducted with practices that are harmful to biodiversity. The opinion of farmers in relation to their agricultural practices and if they generate negative impacts on the environment was investigated. The methodology used was qualitative, with in-depth interviews with farmers of different origin and production systems. Those who grow outdoors emphasize the importance of certain environmentally sound practices. Those who grow under greenhouse know that certain practices are not beneficial to the environment, but consider there is no other way to produce. To conserve biodiversity and achieve progress towards sustainable systems, a change of perspective is required. Agriculture should not be seen as a mere 'product factory', and there should be advancement towards a sustainable conception between man and nature.
