“Selvaggi senza un linguaggio civile”: vocabularios fueguinos recopilados por el misionero Maggiorino Borgatello

Abstract

En esta ponencia nos centramos en la documentación atribuida al sacerdote salesiano Maggiorino Borgatello, quien reunió en las misiones de Tierra del Fuego un conjunto de datos que constituyeron la fuente de los estudios lingüísticos y etnológicos que publicaría en la década de 1920, luego de su regreso a Italia. Analizamos en especial el vocabulario comparado “Italiano, Ona, Alacalufe, Tehuelche”, dado a conocer parcialmente en sus publicaciones, con los propósitos de exponer la dimensión instrumental del mismo y relacionarlo con otros instrumentos estandarizados utilizados por la Congregación en el contexto de esta y otras misiones a su cargo.

In this paper we analyze the linguistic documentation made by the Salesian priest Maggiorino Borgatello. In the missions of Tierra del Fuego he recorded many data that were the source of the linguistic and ethnological studies published by himself in the 1920s, after returning to Italy. We analyze some versions of the comparative vocabulary "Italian, Ona, Alacalufe, Tehuelche", that was partially included in the Congregation’s publications, with the purpose of exposing its instrumental dimension and relate it with other standardized instruments used in this and other missions developed by the Salesians.
