Con el fin de evaluar el consumo de medicamentos en adultos mayores institucionalizados, se
realizó un estudio de utilización de medicamentos observacional, descriptivo y transversal en Geriátricos
de Olavarría, Argentina. Las herramientas para la recolección de datos fueron encuestas semiestructuradas,
entrevistas e historias clínicas. Las variables consideradas fueron: tipo, cantidad, dosis, tiempo de uso,
periodicidad e indicación de los fármacos. Se incorporaron 370 individuos de 79,75 ± 9,95 años. El 91,3%
consumía medicamentos en forma diaria, y de ellos, 26% ingería más de 5 fármacos diferentes al día por
períodos mayores a 5 años. El mayor consumo se registró para benzodiazepinas (46%), antihipertensivos
(42%), antipsicóticos (31%), antiinflamatorios (18%) de los cuales en un 34,17% hubo uso inadecuado y
en el 37,98% se confirmó discordancia entre la indicación y la patología. Docentes y alumnos de la Escuela
de Salud de UNICEN, mediante un voluntariado, capacitaron para evitar la automedicación e interacciones.

To evaluate
consumption of drugs by adults institutionalized, a drug usage study was performed in Geriatrics of Olavarría,
Argentina. Information was obtained by survey, interview and clinical reports. Variables were: type, quantity,
dose, time of use, periodicity and indication. 370 individuals with a mean age of 79.75 ± 9.95 years old were included
in the study. 91.3% of them consumed medicines every day, and from them, 26% took more than 5 different
drugs each day during at least the last 5 years. The major consumed drugs were benzodiazepines (46%), antihypertensives
(42%), antipsychotics (31%), and antiinflammatories (18%). In 34.17% of the cases inadequate
drug utilization was confirmed, and in 37.98% of the patients a lack of correlation between diagnosis and indication
was seen. In order to suppress automedication and reduce drug interactions; teachers and students from UNICEN's
Health School, performed training workshops for nursing, prescriptors and Community.
