Self-determination theory (Deci & Ryan, 1985, 2002; Ryan & Deci, 2000, 2017) posits three universal psychological needs for humans beings: autonomy, competence and relatedness. In the educational field, teachers are the main source that stimulates these needs (Jang et al., 2016; Reeve, 2009; Reeve & Jang, 2006) through the construct called “autonomy support” (AS) (Jang et al., 2016; Reeve, 2009; Stenling et al., 2015). This is defined as what a person does and says to promote the subjective experience of choice (Reeve et al., 2003; Su & Reeve, 2011). Students exposed to AS are more likely to use self-regulatory strategies, active and deep information processing, better performance in task and standardized testing, among other benefits (Reeve, 2009). With this in mind, this study aimed to adapt the Learning Climate Questionnaire (LCQ) to Uruguayan culture as a way to have an AS assessment tool.
Objectives: I) Adapt the LCQ to Uruguayan culture with students of Basic Middle Education from the city of Montevideo, II) determine whether the LCQ is a valid and reliable instrument to assess autonomy support.
