This paper reviews the use of the system of educational practice analysis developed by Emilio Sánchez and collaborators in different studies (Sánchez, García & Rosales, 2010; Sánchez, García, Rosales, De Sixte & Castellano, 2008; Sánchez, Rosales, Cañedo & Conde, 1994; Sánchez, Rosales & Suárez, 1999; Ruano, Sánchez, Ciga & García, 2011) The system involves three dimensions: what is done, how it is done and who does it. The proposal also defines different units of analysis to segment teacher-student interactions: ‘typical classroom activities’, ‘episodes’ and ‘cycles’. In this paper, we specifically analyze the research studies which have used this system of analysis to organize and understand the linguistic exchanges that accompany −or not− students’ reading comprehension processes. We undertake a non-systematic narrative review (Aguilera-Eguía, 2014), or a qualitative, integrative synthesis of the literature (Shanahan, 2000). The search was carried out through Google Scholar. A selection was made of all the empirical research papers which cite the studies where the system of analysis developed by Emilio Sánchez is explained, and which aim to inquire into the ways tutors organize reading classroom activities on a daily basis.
